Much like painting the edges of a room, or cutting in a room, painting the edges of a lawn can take longer for new painters. Also, mistakes can happen if you're not careful. As if getting accidental paint on the ceiling, a mistake painting grass could mean getting paint on concrete, sidewalks, pavers or other unintended areas. If it's caught quickly, you may simply be able to rinse away the Endurant colorant with water.
The best way to assist in case of accidental overspray with Endurant is to wet that edges. This way, the colorant doesn't soak in and dry quickly on porous surface such as concrete. Also, if an overspray occurs, less water is needed to rinse away the colorant.
Secondly, use something to prevent the overspray. Painters tape is likely not a viable option outside. So, instead, almost like using a tarp or drop cloth, you could use cardboard, plywood or another object to work as a shield against accidental overspray. This often requires a helper to walk along side with the cardboard or plywood.
But if you're painting a lot of grass, there is a better option.
Keep grass paint off concrete, driveways and other surfaces using the professionals' choice, an edging wheel. Geoponics recommends using a spray wheel if you are a landscaper or going to be painting a lot of grass. If a spray wheel is out of the budget in the short term, with an estimated cost of $475, then stick with an assistant holding cardboard, ply word or another shield. Overtime, a spray wheel or edging wheel may become a more economical option. (Yet another name for the spray wheel is a wheel sprayer. All the same thing, just different phrases for it.)
There may be other spray wheels, edging wheels or similar products by different names. Geoponics found a particular spray wheel to become so useful for the application of Endurant turf colorants, that we recommend this brand for sale on our website, ShopGeoponics.com. Edging wheels are also for sale with many Endurant Landscape Colorant distributors.
For a small landscaping business, it may take spraying about four lawns for the spray wheel to pay for itself. The investment can be worthwhile if there is a lot of edging. The job will be faster and one less person is needed.
The edging wheel fits easily on almost any equipment. Many landscapers and lawn care companies who use Endurant turf colorants apply the grass paint using a battery powered backpack sprayer. There is a quick fitting for the wand and for the spray wheel.
The spray wheel can be adjusted to spray from either side of the wheel. Adjust the spray nozzle's distance from the wheel to ensure there is the ideal amount of space between nozzle and wheel. When spraying the paint you can test that there isn't too much of a gap where the paint won't be applied as needed but also that the nozzle isn't spraying so much paint on the wheel that it collects and drips. This can be tested with water, just know the paint will be a bit thicker.
Pre-wet the edges to help make clean up easier if overspray were to occur. This is especially necessary if not using a spray wheel or other edging method.
Wetting the edges or nearby concrete, stone, pavers, sidewalks, driveways or other surfaces can avoid a lasting mistake. So, if grass paint gets somewhere it's not intended, it's easier to get off if it was presoaked. Also, continue wetting as needed. Then if overspray occurs, wash immediately with water spraying away from any painted surface.
Paint for grass can paint anything. So, the best advice is to avoid getting paint on surfaces you do not want it to be. But, mistakes happen. So, if overspray occurs wash the surface immediately. Avoid allowing it to dry or soak in. Use Endurant Pigment Cleaner to get off of equipment.
