What is indicator dye?

Indicator dye is a spray indicator used to help see where another product has been sprayed. Spray indicators are usually temporary colorants added to products such as fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides or other products such as foliars and Carbotein, which can be difficult to see on the turfgrass surface without the indicator. When using a large sprayer, adding an indicator dye can help the applicator see that the products have been sprayed evenly, without over-fertilizing or under-fertlizing an area, for example. Seeing exactly where the products were applied using an indicator can help to give even coverage and optimal results.

Advantages to using spray indicators in general include:

  • Trains newer applicators on the best techniques for even coverage by allowing them visibility of the product.
  • Allows immediate visibility of wind directional shifts so if wind drift occurs, you can adjust the sprayer accordingly.
  • Identifies damaged or clogged nozzles that could go unnoticed without the help of the increased product visibility.

Advantages to using Endurant TE as a spray indicator:

  • Most spray indicators are indicator dyes that are soluble in water, do not adhere to the substrate and will wash away immediately or sometimes within 2 to 3 hours. Endurant TE is a pigment that lasts.
  • Endurant TE is formulated with binders for exceptional adherence to turf (Read more about Endurant TE.)
  • Endurant TE provides a natural, vibrant green color to turf while assisting the applicator with knowing where they have sprayed. (See Endurant TE samples and Endurant TE photos.) This is often a highly preferable color compared with blue or unnaturally green indicator dyes.
  • Endurant TE lasts and will continue to enhance the turf color for days or weeks while often saving money in the process.

How to use Endurant TE as an indicator dye:

  • Mix in tank sprayer with other products much like most indicator dyes.
  • Consider the surface area being sprayed to determine quantity needed and rates.
  • Typically the higher the cut of grass, the higher the rate needed. The greater the surface area, the more Endurant TE will be required.
  • Follow all label instructions. Buy Endurant.

Here are some example rates:

  • Golf greens: 5 - 8 oz. per acre
  • Fairways & sports or athletic fields: 10 - 20 oz. per acre
  • Lawns: 16 - 32 oz. per acre
Ultimately, it comes down to the color preference of the applicator and what the applicator likes. But, make no mistake, there should be cost savings on the mix and of course you gain on the longevity while beautifying the end results in the process.
