Heath Harris launched his business, Do It Just Lawn Care, about two years ago in Forney, Texas, east of Dallas. He came across the Endurant Landscape Colorant line on social media and was immediately interested in offering green paint for grass. 

He soon headed to the GIE+EXPO, (now called the Equip Exposition as of 2022) in Kentucky, and stopped by the Endurant Turf Colorant booth by Geoponics. 

“Endurant is a game changer. This was going to give me something to provide customers in the winter,” says Harris. 

So, he bought his first gallon of Endurant off Amazon and used it to paint bermudagrass. Endurant may also be purchased through ShopGeoponics and through distributors in the U.S. and internationally.

With his first gallon in hand, Harris then used his pump sprayer to try out Endurant on dog spots on his home. (Check out Green Again Pro as an option for this as well.)

“I was really happy with it,” says Harris.

So, he decided to try another lawn. This time, he tried Endurant on a family member’s dormant bermudagrass lawn just before Thanksgiving. 

“They were amazed,” Harris recalls.

“The neighbors were stopping by and saying, ‘wow. It looks so natural,’” he adds.

Then, he bought more Endurant from ShopGeoponics and received a yard sign and some business support along with the order.

Mark the Grass Paint and Grow the Business

Just from doing that one family member’s lawn, Harris had 30 requests for quotes. 
“When I was out applying Endurant, people would stop by and they were really interested,” he says. 

“People will come out of their houses, yelling across the yard: ‘What are you doing?’,” adds Harris. 

The answer: Painting the lawn. 

At first some people said it was like cheating, but soon with minimal use of fertilizer, chemical and water, which is a particularly needed and limited resource, especially in Texas, they came to understand the benefits. 

Then, he put up the yard sign. “I used the stakes and corrugated plastic sign that said to keep off the grass.” 

That generated even more estimates, he says. 

“Then, even when I was off property while the grass was curing, those professional signs provided passive marketing. I was so thankful for that support I received,” says Harris.

Startup Costs for a Grass Paint Business

Endurant Grass Paint and a Sprayer Is All You Need

Since those first couple yards, Harris had his own yard signs made with his company logo. He has completed about 27 lawns. 

Harris bought a gallon of paint and eventually added the battery powered four gallon backpack sprayer at a cost of about $150. (The backpack sprayer that we often recommend is the Ryobi available at Home Depot and possibly SiteOne and other landscape supply stores.) 

His total business start up cost was about $300.

Choosing the Shade of Green Grass Paint

Harris is almost always painting on dormant bermudagrass this winter. He has used three of the four paints in the Endurant line: Endurant PR (Perennial Rye), Endurant P+ (Premium) and Endurant TC, the original turf colorant. Endurant TE (Turf Enhancer) and Endurant Flex are pigments and hybrid pigment-paint, respectively. Thus, these two are often used in shoulder seasons, including spring and fall. Endurant Fairway is the darkest in the line and used for when people want a particularly powerful deep, dark, bright green.

Winter Success and Spring Potential

Green Paint for Grass in Winter; Pigments and Mulch Colorants for Spring

Harris invested about $300 and made his return on investment in three jobs. Now, 27 jobs later, he’s happy he took that trip to Kentucky in October. 

Heading into spring, he’s considering trying pigments, which are geared toward actively growing grass, and the mulch colorants, which are great for saving trees and labor.

Tips from a Grass Paint Business

Harris learned a few things along the way that he’s sharing with others. 

  • Adjust the PSI on the backpack sprayer to optimize coverage and complete more jobs in less time. 
  • Use Endurant to limit fertilizer in spring
  • Use less water using Endurant 
  • Take advantage of a yard sign for passive marketing and to keep people off the grass 
  • Attend shows, like the GIE+Expo for business opportunities
  • Follow and share information on IG and other social media
  • If not ready to go for the investment of a spray wheel, try a 32-inch aluminum painters guard with attached PVC to created better lines and edges. 
  • Masonry rope between property lines can be used along with the painters guard for optimal lines and speed. 
  • Apply in a circular motion versus back and forth for faster painting, better blade coverage, less redo and best results.

Q. Is it safe?

A. Endurant is safe for people and pets to walk on once the grass is dried.  

Q. How long does it last?

A. Generally 6 to 8 weeks. But it’s not uncommon to last for 3 months on completely dormant turfgrass that’s not growing and thus not be mowed.
