Achieving the best performance of
colorants on turf grass requires simple preparation prior to application. Answering the following questions is key to successfully applying colorants to the turf.
This brief Q&A guide is geared especially toward helping sod growers, golf course superintendents and other landscape managers of large properties. Home lawn users check out this
blog for some particulars to help with smaller grass painting jobs. Professionals and home lawn users can also find more tips on how to paint turf
here.
Pointers for pros:
What color do I choose?
The color is determined by personal preference and the type of grass to be colored.
Geoponics offers several shades of
Endurant colors which are available in quantities appropriate for a multitude of uses, ranging from home lawn use to large golf courses and huge grow farms.

Sod growers and other turfgrass professionals use these three colorants most on the following grass types:
- Endurant FW is the dark green shade used most for bermuda, fescue and Kentucky Blue Grass.
- Endurant Premium is a rich, vibrant green shade used on all types of turf.
- Endurant PR is a bright green shade most similar to perennial rye grass and is used for Zoysia, Centipede and St. Augustine grasses.
How much colorant do I apply?
The amount of colorant is generally decided based upon the degree of dormancy.
General guidelines are:
- When turfgrass is in partial dormancy, apply turf colorant at rates of 2 to 4 gallons per acre.
- When grass is in full dormancy, apply Endurant at rates in the range of 4 to 8 gallons per acre.
What should the carrier volume be?
Use a mix ratio ranging between 10:1 and 15:1 water to Endurant colorant.
How do I determine the carrier volume for 4 acres of turf?
If you want to apply 5 gallons per acre of colorant at mix ratio of 10:1, the calculations are as follows (you can easily plug in different numbers using your actual acreage, desired application rate and/or mix ratio up to 15:1 to calculate your particular carrier volume):
- 4 acres X 5 gallon/acre = 20 gallons of colorant
- 20 gallons of colorant X 10 (10:1 ratio) =200 gallons water
- 20 gal of colorant X 1 (10:1 ratio) = 20 gallons colorant
- TOTAL CARRIER VOLUME is 220 gallons
How do I set up the spray rig, nozzles, speed, PSI and gallons/ acre of colorant to apply?
Check a nozzle chart from the nozzle manufacturer. Both
Greenleaf and
TeeJet offer online catalogs as well as print catalogs.
